So, tomorrow will be two weeks that I have had my iPhone and I'm absolutely in love. I have found some wonderful apps that are accessible and are a lot of fun.
Two I paid for so far is Shazam and Ladida. Shazam is a music identifier. The app captures about 5 to 10 seconds of audio, it has to be music. however it automatically returns the name of the artist, name of the song, album, a you tube search, and connection to your Twitter and facebook and allows you to keep the tags. This is useful for when you're out somewhere, you hear a song you like, and you can get the name, right away!
ladida, is so much fun. It gives you six different styles of music. Pick a style, pick the tempo and it will supply you with a metronome. hit record, sing, or rap to the metronome. After you stop recording, it processes quickly and generates your own song! It follows the chords you sang and everything. Amused by your own work? You might be amused by other Ladida members so you can go to the discovery section and listen to other people's submissions. You can save your Ladida projects. it's sooo much fun.
Other apps i have are Around me which is a fantastic GPS app, Haytell, Local Chat, what's Good, mapQuest Mobile, dictionary.com's app, Pandora Radio, just to name a few. IF you have any apps that you recommend, let me know? I'll give some more if you wish.
If you have audible.com, the audible iphone app is so worth it. No syncing with the computer to get your new books. Just buy and stream or download directly on your iphone. It can even keep track of your place between your computer and our phone, if you like.
If you're looking for music, the XM Radio app works well if you have that service. If not, try Slacker Radio. If you're looking for free, sky.fm is a good option; it has a paid upgrade for better sound and commercial free listening.
For games, I like accessible minesweeper as a casual game. Frotz is also good to have, if you like text adventures. I also have hangman, though I rarely play it.
For news, I like the newsy app for audio news bites. There are also several good RSS readers for the phone; check applevis.com for those. I also like the NASA app, because I love spaceflight news, and it gives me easy access to Nasa TV, mission information, status updates, and so on.
The apps I've got are skype, IM plus pro, cracked reader, sleep machine, navigon, where the hell am I, foursquare, free wifi, omoby, dragon dictation, guitar tuner, Mobile me's idisk app, facebook, ventafone, colloquy, tweet list, ssh terminal, boxcar, and a few others that are for fun. If you jailbreak your phone, you will also be able to get some other cool apps like PDA Net which will allow you to tether your iphone.
What in the fuck does jail breaking do? it seems pointless. I ahve an iPod touch. And those exploits don't last long.
Anyone got any instructions for jailbreaking on OS X? I'm not sure I'd do it to a phone, but for a touch it should be fine.
ooo guitar tuner? is it good/accessible and does it work well? details? link? lol would love one of those
Man what else does jail breaking do? I mean what cool apps can yo get with it anyway?
IM+ Pro, Facebook, Twitter, LiveJournal, Skype, Heytell, Pandora, Around Me, Foursquare, Dictionary, Wikipedia, Choice Of The Dragon, Choice Of The Vampire, Thumb Jam, Talking Tom, Zany Touch, Moxie, Shut The Box, Simon, Simon Says, Finger Bowling, Finger Basketball, Paper toss, more.
What are Moxie, Shut The Box, Simon, Simon Says, Finger Bowling, Finger Basketball, Paper toss, and thumb Jam? And I'm going to check them out. i want more games that are accessible. Only game i really have is Zaney touch.
Oh yeah, and I also have Dragon Dictation.
To play those games, you have to turn Voiceover off. Always looking for new games to play. I do have some vision...
Well I've come on over to the shiny side ... for my fortieth, my father-in-law gave me an iPod Touch. So, while I can't do this as fast as some young fools on here, I'm finding it pretty easy to flick, slide, type on it, even looking at web sites.
Flick can be annoying I rather move my finger around as though I was reading it but still.
So for apps right now:
How Stuff Works
Drop box
Documents 2
Omoby
iBooks
Saytext
echofon
twezr - can do any of your online info.
a few others.
Gotta watch the wi fi with the battery on the iPod Touch. Probably get me a external power pack for it or something.
I like the whole dock / moving apps around experience.
You mean none of you all have a farting ap? Was hoping you all would say so so I know which one will work with Voiceover ... add to a Christmas prank or something
try Fart For Free for that one. The buttons read with VoiceOver but so far turning off VoiceOver you would need to memorize locations first in order to pull something off. But it's entertaining.
Jailbreaking is great for getting apps which apple hasn't approved. I suggest you look at applevis and the guides that Rose has posted for what it is. I'm going to write one for jailbreaking 4.2.1 as I've successfuly done it and gotten icy installed. Icy is the accessbile alternative to cydia. As for apps I have:
boxcar
coloquy
dragon dictation
dropbox
game center (not apples, but another one that is called the same thing made by gamefly for news and release informatio).
IM+ Pro
Pandora
Thumb Jam
Around Me
The Cracked Reader
Digit-Eyes
Emergency Radio
Facebook
Foursquare
Heytell
I Heart Radio
Music ID
Navigon
OMobi
Recordpad
Sendero GPS
Skype
SSH Terminal
Tastekid
Time Tuner
Tweet List
Ventafon
Would love games, but I've found no good ones. Aurifi started to get boring after a while, and I beat Soul Trapper. I might look at the finger ones though. Zainy Touch and all of those just don't seem interesting to me.
i found that IMO for instent messaging works well. i use it for both facebook chat and msn. i found it better than IM+, the lite version for IM+ at least.
I ahve found farting apps but they serve real no purpose. if you want, take a look at kinky dice. Jailbreaking not only allows you to run unapproved apps from apple, but it allows you to access features of the phone that you otherwise couldn't.
Like what features? Do you still have to purchase the apps from apple?
Well I purchased IM+ Pro for that purpose. it was on sale for 2.99 the other day, so I jumped at it, quick!
Tried some of the finger games and the paper toss, not accessible at all... From what I've seen.
I just got Dragon Dictate and it seems it will help with some things. I've never done dictation software before, but it looks like you can use it to dictate segments, edit them using the keyboard, then send to Facebook, Twitter or email, or just copy them to the clipboard. I am just using the built-in mic on the iPod Touch plus the accompanying earbuds to do it.
Worht a shot, I think, and if you're still in school it may really help with some things. Plus, I'm thinking just like touch screens, we're all going to have to learn how to do dictation now. There are so many services that use it, and it's like it uses a totally different part of the brain, at least for me. I find the app easy to use. The difficult part is the dictating. I'm so used to formulating my thoughts by typing.
I will just add this, and I don't mean to sound like I'm going gaga or anything:
I find the iPod a real joy to use. By that I mean, the context of things - where they're located - is as important as the things themselves. Of course, as a developer, I know this. However, I've never had access to it in such a viewable perspective like the touch screen. Yes, I have had to learn flick, but to really look at things is really nice.
Since I have no Braille with it and won't be buying a display for it any time soon, I wondered if speech was going to give me a headache. Until now, I've tolerated speech as a necessary evil. It does some things faster, such as when you're typing or need to move very quickly across large segments, so you don't have to take the hands off the keyboard to read.
However, the speech on the iPod is minimalist. I still use all its hints of course, as I'm new, but the sounds really needed no explanation. Really, the combination of the touch screen plus the way the Voiceover reads it is really nice. I wouldn't care much for mousing about on a keyboard with Voiceover to find things, but I can see on a mac if you have the Track Commander on, you can just zoom in on what you want.
With other speech paradigms, I've always been expending energy translating in my head to get positional and contextual data. But the combination here is really very nice.
Like all things it has its frustrating moments, like when I must use the flick to get somewhere and I then kind of feel like I'm off in space / don't know where I'm at, but even to read, I've moved my finger like reading Braille, tracking lines, I believe they call it. And I didn't even know I was doing it until I noticed it the other day.
Basically, in 1996 I was introduced to Windows which opened up a world of possibilities: standard menus, no learning of application-specific keys, etc. The Internet, as hard as it was to use back then, was also very groundbreaking.
I feel like this device has done it again. Rarely do I have personal feelings about technology, it's just a machine and we use it to do what's necessary. But this device has so much potential, and the apps on the market in large part work. If you explore around, the text doesn't bleed from one control to another like happens with a review cursor in Windows. Because you're interacting with the screen elements, you really are able to gather a lot without a ton of excessive speech.
I wouldn't want to control it by going bump bump bump with arrow and tab keys like Windows. In fact, in Windows more often than not, I'd turn on the revies cursor and flip around with a Braille display.
So what does this really mean? I'm on vacation right now, so of course my life's slower than it normally is. But I believe with time, the combination of small mobile device, touch interface, VoiceOver, and applications store, I'm going to be able to do much more than I ever have. Perhaps I should say, I will be able to do a lot of things far more quickly.
I apologize if anyone has puked over the gaga here, anyone who has followed me here or other technical web sites knows I can be as cranky at Apple as any other developer serving enterprise consumers, but this device alone is amazing. For me personally, I continue to be surprised at what it affords.
I think you need voiceover off for moxy, or at least I didn't find the buttons all that accessible and easy to use. I'm also looking for games particularly for my iPhone. Does anyone know of any bubble breaker type games that are accessible or games kinda like I think it's called quicktap?
Anyone else on here use Saytext?
I can't for the life of me get it to auto focus / beep. Any other OCR apps you all are finding useful?
Thanks,
Leo
No. You use a different store that isn't apple's app store. I would suggest you look at applevis under guides and look for the one done by rose. It'll explain everything you could want to know about what jailbreaking is, and how it works.
Flashlight, Goodreads, Birthdays With Push, 977 Music, Blind Memory, Secret Sound, Tick Tack Free, Four Free, Word Cookie
If you enjoy audiogames, I'd reccommend Soul Trapper (10 dollars) an audio action adventure game in style of a gamebook. I'd also reccommend Papa Sangre, an accessible Horor-themed adventure game it is 7 dollars.
If you want music creation aps, I'd reccommend Thumbjam (7 dollars) which is like a mini synth, with about thirty high quality sampled sounds. There are some unlabeled buttons, but the layout is simple to memorize. Also for games, if your into Bop-it style games, Smack me (3 dollars) has a lite version, and is very fun, as is Zany Touch ( 4 dollars)
There is also another called Flip it which only works with the 4th gen ipod and phones and is very fun. If you enjoy GPS aps then Sendero GPS LookAround (5 dollars) tells nearest heading, street, and points of interest and is completely accessible. Hope you like these.
Moxie is a word game similar to Milton bradley's upwards or Scrabble. Shut the box is a number game, Finger bowling is a bowling game of some sort I would presume, and so is finger basketball, a basketball game. Paper toss involves paper airplanes, but I'm not sure since I've never played it. If you enjoy pranks, then try epic pranks (free) or epic pranks xtreme (2 dollars) both totally accessible and hilarious apps which give lists of pranks. Thumb jam was described in my earlier post
If you want a bar code scanner, then try DigitEyes (5 dollars) it's pretty good. Wish there was a DAW for the IPod, but that's wishfull thinking. I don't even have one. I just use my friend's if I need to, but for some since it's a third generation, I can't get vo to enable on it, so she has to read everything to me. I tested VO yesterday and It's amazing! Wish I could get my hads on an Ipod Touch or and Iphone, but I can't afford one. Maybe when the Iphone gets to Verizon, and maybe if my Phone contract ends.
AppleVis has a lot of accessible apps, so does maccessibility.net.
Matthew
I never got the hang of soul trapper, I mean I could get him to use the water, go up the latter and that is about it. The unlabeled buttons drove me up the wall. When I went to swing the soul trapper device at a ghost, well it never moved.
You have to hit the arrows that come up on the screen. It was pretty easy for me since I have some sight, the hardest part was the sword fight.
Muggle Net, Inception The App, iAmDrums, iAmGuitar, Papa Sangre, BopIt, , Moxie 2.
So from a none sighted way, how do you use the soul trapper device on the ghost? Any help would bee quite appreciated at this time.
I just got Navigon today for about half the price.
I recommend Track This for package tracking.
Garmin Street Pilot was just made fully accessible, and it's quite amazing.
The only comment I see from folks regarding the street pilot program is currently there is a bug in the interface that does not rout trip information through the headset even if one is connected, it sends the info through the phone speaker. Could be a problem if traveling in a loud or busy area. They are aware of the issue and hopefully it'll be taken care of shortly.
A bunch of the ambiance apps work, Nature Sounds, even the iBrainWave app which has some interesting sound effects. Even the ones with the binaural beats have nice sounds, although the evidence is extremely sketchy at best of their effectiveness.
Still: Storms, seashore, mountains, etc., nice soundscapes, and many are free.
I did notice that it wouldn't route through the headset. Kinda weird! I'm sure they'll get it fixed though. It really is a great app!
is navigon any good?
I just got an iPhone today. I'm totally blind, and have never used a touch screen or any Apple products before, actually, except an iPod Shuffle Minny I used to have, but it didn't have a touch screen. Any suggestions for getting started, besides the obvious installing iTunes and activating the phone?
Get all the podcasts on the iPod Touch and iPhone from BlindFoolTech the guy who did those ought to get paid for it.
http://www.blindcooltech.com/
I'd say just use yours as much as you can and get used to it. I'm not a 'fan', but the reason I love it is if you have to use speech with anything the speech is minimalist and it supports so many mainstream applications which are so incredibly useful to us.
I didn't review my post, typo there, it's BlindCoolTech.
Anyway, just got Papasangre last night and Oh my God what an enormous trip! It's awesome! And on the common market. What a great game, though not for the PC or faint of heart / constitution.
Steve Jackson's Sorcery! The Shamutanti Hills
Guys, even though we might know what some of them do, when ever you post a new app, just put a little of what it is. Thanks.
Yeah, that would help, I would agree with Dan.
Other apps I've got:
Amazon
Barnes & Noble
Track This {Package Tracker}
Southwest {airlines}
iNotePad
Secret Diary
I have Skype, Papa Sangre, tweet List, AIM, Money Reader, 4square, webster dictionary, Fidelio, (which makes it so I can use my docking station, but I'm not really sure what the hell it's supposed to do), Ibooks, IElements, (since I'll have to take chemistry in college for my major and I'm going to be diving in over my head when I do), Pandora, and Smack Me, (kind of like bopIt, but there's a little robot on the screen)
Some of the ones I have seen here seem really interesting. eventually, I might look into getting the where the Hell am I app, and the barcode thing.
King's Corner / Card Game
apps I have, iPinion (take surveys and get paid for them), Iheartradio (listen to clear channel radio stations all over the country), iLullaby (lullabies for baby), baby soother (more songs and videos to soothe baby, KLove (the popular nationwide christian radio station), Ringtone maker (make ring tones out of your music), Navigon (gps app), Skype (voice chat app), Light detector (see if there is light at your location), star maker, radio.com (more radio stations to listen to.), net flicks (not very accessible) (rent movies and watch them on computer or other netflicks capable device), Kayak (search many travel websites at once for flights, hotels, cars, vacation packages, and cruises), southwest (southwest airlines app), IM plus (instant messaging app), beep beep (simon style game), brain tooner (solve math equations as fast as you can), spelling bee (spelling game, spell the word in one minute or less for each word), hangman (hangman game,), heytell (another voice chat program), around me (another gps type of app that tells you what is around your location), routeasy (an app that tells you bart and muni train schedules for the san francisco bay area), facebook (facebook app), peekaboo (baby rattle app with animal sounds), ringtones (popular ringtones), and talking tom. On the southwest app, it doesn't seem to be all that accessible with voiceover, I'd like to know how you can use it.
Stem Stumper - Puzzle Game for Blind/VI
alpha baby, help baby learn the alphabet, where is pup learn different parts of the body on puppy and kitty, lets count count from 1 to 5 with animals, hd radio more radio stations, four square connect with friends and see what places they are at, tango make video calls with any tango user, facelyHD for iPhone facebook app that isn't as cluttered as the main facebook app, tuneIn radio another radio app, pandora radio streaming app that streams stations based on artists and songs.
Stem Stumper is a neat game for a myriad of reasons:
First, it really does help with getting to know your grid on your device, you basically move your finger, as in a maze, to cause the vine to move, reach, and stretch around obstacles to get to the fertilizers which are like the pills in Packman. You use the acorns to blast the stumps, but lose hit points, what they call flower power - sounds like former days - but anyway it is a pretty interesting game.
It lacks the 3D theatrical effects of a Papa Sangre, but don't be fooled by its relative simple interface: it's quite the puzzle. And, though it is targeted as a game blind / VI people can play, it's not exclusively for us, nor is the interface minimalist. It has been reviewed in mainstream publications. Pretty cool.
gotta get my hands on stem stumper. :)
Has anyone in the UK tested Night jar? It's a new game from the makers of Papa sangre, but it's not available to those of us in the US yet.
Well so far the only two apps I've downloaded for my IPhone/IPod are the Audible and Facebook apps, though I only have the Audible app on my IPod. I am curious about what GPS app(s) people find most user friendly though as far as a blindness perspective goes.
This is not an app, but there is a GPS hardware I intend to buy when I have $100 not already spoken for by the fam:
Dual Electronics XGPS150 Universal Bluetooth GPS Receiver for iPad 2, iPad, iPod touch, iPhone and Other Smartphones, Tablets and Laptops
Unlike the BadElf solution, it does not drain your battery: it is Bluetooth.
While it is marketed for iPod Touch users, iPhone users have had success with it as well. Any GPS-aware app will use this device. That is gonna be one well-spent $100 from Amazon for any of us who can.
Wow. Interesting.
Leo, that's interesting since I heard anyway, rumor of course that iPhone could not use external gps receivers since it already had one. Good to know one could use an external one now.
To the poster to asked about gps apps, I have navigon and I find it a pretty good app to use. I can tell it to navigate me to a route using a car, bike, pedestrian or truck I think, and it also has voice announcements. I can also search nearby points of interest and actually make a route to one of those places and save it to my favorites. If the place also has a number I can call the business right from the app as well. I'm sure many of the other mainstream gps apps have something similar to navigon's features but this is the one I heard was recommended a lot and the one I have been using myself.
Hmmm. I'll have to pop on over to the App store and have a look at it. Due to a recent end to an unhealthy relationship I imagine I'll be doing a lot more walking to go pay my rent LOL. And since I'm in a different apartment I'll have to work on figuring out the best route to get to the housing office and things like that.
I've tested Nightjar. It's good fun, but it's not very long, and the ending... Well, it leaves you wondering whether there's another level or not! Compared to Papa Sangre it's very simple, but for a free ap, I shouldn't complain.
What is NightJar about?
Basically, you'e the last person trapped on a space ship that's travelling towards a collapsing star. you're invaded by aliens and you must find your way out .That's it really!
And, it's not in the U.S. stores yet Boo hoo! I've grown to enjoy these iPhone games, a great way to take a brain break from what you're doing or kill a couple hours when the daughter has a sleepover load of lmfao-textin' teenagers over.
I haven't gotten very far on Papa Sangre. That stupid Snuffle Hog keeps getting me while i'm going for the musical notes in level two, I believe it is ... I keep panicking while I hear him running around patroling the room, and I can't keep myself calm long enough to hear where the notes are in relation to where I am.
Plus, I have to worry about not stepping on the toys and other things in there ...
I guess I'll just have to keep plugging away at it.
Leo, what is the app you use to take pictures of various objects, then the app tells you what they are? I can't seem to find it. I really like Ibooks, it's so simple to use. Are there any other apps besides thumb jam and Mscribble for music making?
Matthew
I don't have many apps on my previous gen Ipod touch at the moment... slacker radio, pandora, skype, some Macintosh reference apps, and a tuner/metranome.
Does anybody know of any blackjack or texas holdum apps that are voiceover friendly? Or perhaps any other casino related apps... Thanks.
Kings corner is a card game similar to holdem I beleive for about a dollar or so.
omoby you can take pics and it tells you what it is. not sure if that's the one your talking about?
Yes, Omoby and it seems to be the most reliable of similar apps for this.
Thanks for the suggestion Matt. I'm really after blackjack specificly.
Yes, that's what I meant. Cameron, I think if you look on AppleVis, or Maccessibility.net, they may have something. Also you could use Safari to get an account at the All In Play card room which features blackjack, spades, and a bunch of other card games.
I'm having trouble with OMoby. When I hold the phone slightly above the exact center of the box, and take picture, it only takes a very small peice of the whole picture and therefore can not give accurate results on what this is. Should I turn flash on? How do I know with the view finder when VO says to fill the box with the image, how do I know the box is filled with the image?
Matthew
There is a lot of great information on the VI Phone Mailing List page
Here.
First, the camera is at the top right corner of your phone, so you want to have that top right corner centered over the middle of the container. Make sure you have decent light, that the screen curtain is off, and you will probably want to use your Flash.
I have an iPod which has no Flash and oMoby does work great there.
Also lay the box on its side, if it's say a box of crackers or serial, rather than having it stand up. At least until you're used to it and can then hold the phone at an angle.
It's all in the proportions and angles from which you make the approach.
Leo, Thanks so much for telling me about hte VIphone list. It has lots of usefull and interesting info as you said. Thanks for the info.
Matthew
So, I'm having trouble scanning barcodes with DigitEyes. Any suggestions? I've read the online help, but I'm still stumped.
I looked on ViPhone regarding OMoby but did not find much. How do I take a picture of the item so that OMOby will identify it? How do I know that the box is filled with the image in the view finder? Would it help if I turned flash on? Please help, I really want to use this app since it is so interesting.
Sunshine And Rain, I forgot about DiGit Eyes, but I'l look int oit. Have you looked on ViPhone? It may help. It's a google group for blind and Visually Impaired Iphone Users.
How do I get on VIPhone?
So, the apps I have are:
DigitEyes, Secret Sound, Groupon, Skype, IM+, Papa Sangre, Pandora, AOL Radio, OOtunes, Bible Today, Adapt Trivia, Feeds, Wikipedia, iTV, Aurifi, Stem Stumper, Hourly Chime, LookAround Sendero GPS, Crockpot, MoneyReader, LightDetector, Omoby, Facebook and probably a whole bunch more that I can't remember.
http://groups.google.com/group/viphone
However, I would set my preferences to web only and no emails if I were you: this is a very high traffic Google group, so you have been warned.
I subscribe to several Google groups public and private, most are a message or two or less a day, contrasted with VIPhone which can rank in the hundreds per day.
Its usefulness is the online archives anyway when you need to go look for something. And you can search its archives without being a member - it isn't a private club membership as are some Google Groups.
Unless you hate your system administrator / ISP I wouldn't decimate a POP server with so much traffic on one account.
Oh, and the web interface reads pretty nicely with your iOS device.
Thanks. So I just put this link in my browser address field?
I think so.
I'm still frustrated with the ViewFinder in OMoby. I got WOrd Popper which is a fun word game, involving popping bubbles with letters in them to make words. It's pretty accessible. I just got Moxie, but I haven't played it yet. I'm also having trouble with Facely Hd. I signed onto my Facebook with out any problem. My friend has a facebook page on which are a couple of vidios. I see no links to the vidios, just his comment, then the length of the vidio. I've tried double tapping all over the place, but I can't seem to get the vidios to play. My friend says that if you click in the center of the screen the vidios will play, but they do not. I'm so frustrated. Any help will be greatly apreciated.
Matthew
The updated Facebook app is very usable by us VoiceOver users now and it is far less sluggish than is the FaceLy application.
OK as it pertains to the view finder, don't worry about it saying tap to focus.
Align your camera with the object, and remember with the home button facing you the camera is upper right rear corner of the device, the northeast corner if you will.
Center that over the center of the object, then raise it up. Press the Take Picture button located in the very botty middle of the screen, don't use flick flak around or you'll get lost it's bottom middle of the device's screen. I hold the device with both hands poise the thum above the area where the button is, find and double tap it, holdd the thing still till it takes the picture.
And, I've heard this when sighted people were being coached on photography so just applied it here: No chicken wings. You'll be tempted maybe to put your arms out or something, just keep them firmly at your side. I don't know why the temptation is to do that, but I first heard of it when observing sighted photographers being coached.
Anyway oMoby is pretty good about dealing with a semi-blurred picture provided there's enough of the image it can associate to an entry in the database.
I say this as a completely blind person: the pictures of small objects I've taken, like tins of fish, a battery for my daughter's camera etc. cannot possibly be that good, not like my daughter or other photography people. You just get the angle and proportions right and oMoby does the rest, like sighted people do facial recognition in crowds, by associating an image to an entry in a database, aka memory of a past event for humans.
All I can say is a. don't forget to turn off Screen Curtain, and b. keep fooling with it. Once you do it enough on flat things which are lying on a surface, say even a CD, you'll be doing bottles and cans in no time. Just remember oMoby isn't trying to find a bar code: it's doing what a sighted person does when they see a familiar logo. I guarantee you if a sighted person sees a Coke in the fridge, they know it's a Coke by its logo and not by reading the word 'Coke'. Probably, and maybe especially, goes for low-vision people / those using reading glasses, who cannot read the fine print so well.
You will master it, if I have: I hav never had any eyesight at all and so I'm pretty certain the images I take cannot possibly be as good as someone sighted. But oMoby gets it, even with an iPod Touch. Just turn off Screen Curtain and make sure the light's on in the room where you're taking the picture.
Where do you go to turn off screen curtain? I don't remember seeing that in the camera app.
Hmm I will answer this question about the screen curten, you have to use a 3 finger tap to turn off your screen. A person needs to use the 3 finger triple tab I just tried it with my ipod touch.
7 Little Words, Word Popper, Sudoku4All.
If anyone plays the game Smack Me, I wonder if you can answer the following question. Are you having an issue where the game freezes and shuts down, then when you turn voiceover back on, it's taken you back to the home screen? This has happened to me a number of times already. I payed $2 for this and I'm not about to run through that nonsense and ask for my money back. That game is too much fun. *smiles*
Ariadne GPS
There are hundreds of gps apps. Do we really need one more?
Ariadne GPS is more than a simple gps app.
Besides offering you the possibility to know your position and to get information about the street, the number, etc. it also lets you explore the map of what's around you.
What do we mean by saying "explore"? You'll deal with a talking map. If you have voice over activated on your device, you will be able to know the street names and numbers that are around you by touching them. Just put your finger on the screen of your device, when showing the map and moving it you will be told the info's about the street you're touching. Your position is on the center of the screen. What's in front of you is on the top half of the screen and things behind you are on the bottom half of the screen.
You can also explore a different region than the one around you by telling the app the street and the city.
You can ask for information about your position at any time, also activating a function, called monitor, that will give you this info periodically (Please read the note below).
This app has also got some other useful features that might help when walking or traveling by bus, train etc.
If you add your favourite points to the app database, you can be alerted when you get closer than a certain distance to one of them.
This app is completely accessible using voice over and gives you access to information that are normally unavailable to people using the speech synthesizer and can be therefore especially useful to blind and partially sighted people.
Note: The features of the app are based on the gps positioning service and on a remote server for what concerns the information on the position. These informations might not be accurate, due to the gps accuracy, which is generally below fifteen metres but in some cases can be of a few tens of metres and to the remote service, which might be unresponsive in certain moments (the app will tell you if that's the case).
The aim of the app is giving you an idea of your position and what is around you.
Please do not completely rely on it.

When I can, I'm geting Ariadne GPS.
To me there are severall really exciting aspects to this: making use of the touch screen and spatial orientation which is what a map really is anyway, and, announcement of upcoming streets etc.
Is Ariadne GPS superior to navigon?
I probably should know this already as long as I have had my iPhone, but alass, I don't. So I'll put it out here. What are all the apps I can use to scan labels like the ones on cans, if there are such things?
Jess
Jess, consider oMoby and VizWhiz which are free.
They do not scan bar codes, they recognize the image of the label like a human does.
As to the GPS question it depends on what you are looking for. If you have constant data access, yes Ariadne will help you because you can see where you are, explore your area, etc. Other than that Navigon is great because it downloads the maps to your device.
Hi all. Got my IPhone a little over a month ago and am now hopelessly addicted. Have so many favorite apps that it's hard to list them all lol. But I have a few questions. First, are any of those musical instrument apps usable with VO? I've tried ones for piano and guitar and can't get them to work for me, though I've had a little more success with the bongos. Second, fellow Livejournal users, which app do you use to post entries and read your friends page? I'm not very fond of the official app and I know there are a few others out there. Thanks, and happy tapping and swiping.
I just got Stem Stumper, but I keep having to start over at the beginning whenever I want to play from where I left off. Is there no way to save one's last game, or does it do that automatically when you exit? It's lots of fun. I know what I'm doing on the plane on the way to Orlando. *smiles*
I also got Boxcar, and an app called free sound effects.
Refering to the person who had the smack me problem, I have had this problem with several apps. You'll be working in them, and then it'll randomly take you to the home screen... Any reasons as to why?
Thanks!!!

Yeah I've had that happen. I just start over with the app. Pandoradoes it too when you've had it on awhile. I am looking in to getting myself a braille pen12 for the iPhonewhichgives it a fully functioning 12-cell braille display whichyou can use to control the phone itself via bluetooth. So, I can text & everything & have my phone safely in my pocket. The bluetooth is a battery's worst nightmare, so ifI'm doing something like hooking my phone up to my stereo & playing pandora, I won't be using the display.
get a battery pack. they are life savers on the road, and you can get like 3 or 4 charges from them until you have to recharge the packs themselves.
hey guys!!! might be getting an IPhone and I'm wondering how easy is it to type on one? That's my biggest worry, that I won't be able to type hahah!
It's slow going at first but gets easier over time. I can't type as fast as I can on my N86 with predictive text turned on, but I've developed muscle memory over time and usually go right to the letter I want to enter. It just takes patience and practice. I also think it's easier with 1 touch typing turned on. You can always get a bluetooth keyboard if you don't like typing on the touch screen. Or, you could try one of the tactile screen protectors that AT Guys is now selling. It sticks onto the screen and has raised dots representing the keyboard. You still have to know where the letters are but you get some tactile feedback to help with orientation. I bought one for my mom but haven't tried it myself yet. Hopefully I'll have time to play with her phone this weekend.
Is there an app for the iPhone that will let me listen to music from my computer using my wireless connection? Kinda likea network situation?
